(NT 5227 1763) Fort (NR)

OS 1:10000 map (1982)

Fort, Clarilaw Hill: On the top of the southernmost of the group of ridges that form Clarilaw Hill, at a height of 550ft OD, there are the last vestiges of a fort which once measures approximately 300ft from NE to SW by 100ft transversely.

The NE defences, which lie at right angles to the main axis of the ridge, comprise a single rampart, 14ft thick but now only 1ft 6ins high, and an outer ditch, while at the SW end there are slight traces of double ramparts with an intervening ditch. The connecting ramparts of the two longer sides have been completely destroyed by erosion. No gateways or internal structures are visible.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1951.

This fort is generally as described by the RCAHMS. Internally it has measured about 62.0m by 30.0m transversely. No trace of an outer ditch was seen on the NE side of the fort and only the inner rampart is evident at the SW end. About 30m SW from this side the natural slope appears to have been artificially scarped in two places, suggesting outer defences.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (EGC), 3 March 1965.

Photographed by the RCAHMS in 1980.

(Undated) information in OS Archaeology records.

Note (17 August 2015 - 24 May 2016)

The remains of a fort are situated on the southernmost of the ridges that make up the summit of Clarilaw Hill. An elongated oval on plan it measures internally about 85m from NE to SW by 30m transversely (0.25ha). Little trace of any defences can be seen along the margins of the ridge, but a rampart reduced to a low bank can be seen with an external ditch cutting across its spine, while on the SW there are traces of twin ramparts with a medial ditch. The interior is featureless and the position of the entrance is unknown. The defences at the SW end are overlain by the E angle of a rectilinear enclosure probably of post-medieval date.
