(NT 42376 62881) Dovecot (NR)

OS 6" map (1971)

Dovecot, Whitburgh: Some distance from the mansion there is a dovecot in the upper part of a cylindrical building 50ft 4 ins in circumference, with a conical slate roof and glover. Its harled and whitewashed wall, 22 1/2 ins thick, is encircled with iron bands; there are no string courses. Entrance to the nest boxes is via an ironclad door at first floor level; there are four entrances to the lower floor. Entry for the pigeons is through the glover.

A N Robertson 1952; D C Bailey and M C Tindall 1963

Though the SDD date this dovecot to the early 19th century, McWilliam states that it is probably of 18th century date.

C McWilliam 1978; SDD List 1962

This dovecot is as described.
