OS 6" map (1971)
Dovecot, Johnstounburn: In the park near the mansion (NT46SE 17) there is a double lectern type dovecot, measuring 29ft by 19ft 3 ins. The random rubble walls are 2ft 7 ins thick, 20ft high in front and 36ft high at the rear; there is one string course. The roof is of slate; in it there are two dormers, each with fifteen entry holes. The gables are ornamental, of early 18th century type, but it is more likely that other details, such as the two glazed half dormers in the S wall, with diamond-shaped panes, were added a century later. This dovecot is inscribed 'JB 1730'. Internally, there are two floors and a central round pillar lined with nest boxes like the walls; there are about 2,000 stone nests.

This dovecot is as described and in good condition.
