Archaeology Notes

NT46NW 4 423 669.

The remains of strong stone walls, apparently the foundations of some large building, several 'stone vases', urns, also an ancient roadway paved with square blocks of stone, were found about 2 1/2' below the surface during the drainage of two cultivated fields, Easter Cairn and Wester Cairn, situated a little NW of Templehall and about 75 - 80 chains N by W of W Peaston.

(OS 6" 1852 shows the fields Easter Cairn and Wester Cairn centred at NT 4245 6700 and NT 4227 6680 respectively, whilst in the latter shafts and a road to Fountainhall Colliery are shown. Such publication suggests that the remains described above are not those of colliery buildings.)

Name Book 1853

There is nothing to be seen on the ground and no local knowledge of any finds in these fields.

Visited by OS (BS) 21 October 1975

Two enclosures, at NT 425 669 and NT 424 669, are visible on air photographs taken by RCAHMS in 1976, 1977 and 1980. See sites NT46NW 85 and NT46NW 86.

Cropmarks, at NT 427 669, are listed by CUCAP. See NT46NW 86.
