(NT 4343 4482) Ewes Castle (NR)

(remains of)

OS 6" map (1964)

Ewes Castle, an oblong tower, is now in the last stages of dilapidation. It measures externally 44 1/4ft by 29 1/2ft. To the E and W are the foundations of small outbuildings with their S walls in line with that of the tower. A courtyard can be traced on the N with the buildings as its S boundary.

RCAHMS 1929, visited 1915.

All that remains of this tower is a large mound of rubble, about 3.0m high, slightly hollow on top. Part of the NW and SE angles and part of the face of the S wall of the tower protrude from the mass of rubble, indicating that it was an oblong structure about 14.3m E-W by 9.2m transversely. The S side of the tower abuts on to the S side of a small courtyard formed by a stone wall now about 1.8m wide by 0.4m high, measuring some 34.5m E-W by 26.2m transversely. There are traces of possible outbuildings within the courtyard in the SE angle and abutting its W side.

Visited by OS (WDJ), 20 June 1961.
