Archaeology Notes

HU31SE 11 384 127

See also HU31SE 5 and HU31SE 8.

HU 383 128. A house site at the NE corner of Quendale Bay was totally excavated in 1957 and 1958. The structure, modified during occupation and much eroded, showed a group of cells with hearths and work- benches grouped round a central feature of stone slabs set on edge. Pottery was mainly Neolithic/Bronze Age. Stone and bone artifacts were also found.

Information from Mr and Mrs A Rae 1958

No trace and no local knowledge of this site. It is the opinion of Mr T Henderson, Lerwick Museum Curator, that Rae is referring to HU31SE 8. However, in the area centred HU 384 127 are the scant remains of an ancient field system defined by field walls, showing only as rickles of stones and clearance heaps. Two slight sub-circular rickles of pebbles may possibly be the amorphous remains of houses, at HU 3835 1273 and HU 3833 1266, and there is a burnt mound nearby (HU31SE 5).

Visited by OS (AA) 8 May 1968.
