(NT 4231 2954) Foulshiels Birth place of Mungo Park (NAT)

OS 6" map (1909)

The ruined cottage in which Mungo Park, the explorer, was born in 1771, sits a few yards back from the Selkirk - St Mary's Loch road. It was announced this week that the Buildings Authority of Selkirk County Council has given permission to Buccleuch Estates to demolish it. The walls are unsafe and the building is roofless.

Information from 'The Scotsman' 16 April 1969

The remains of Foulshiels were restored in 1971 to commemorate the bicentenary of Mungo Park's Birth. The roofless cottage, which is 16.4 m by 6.2 m, has a 2.0 m high front wall and a back wall up to 1.0 m high. There are no window frames or doors. A plaque in the front wall states that Mungo Park was born in 1771 and died in 1805.
