Archaeology Notes

NT42NE 53 45066 27712

Not to be confused with Philiphaugh (woollen) mill (NT 4576 2805), for which see NT42NE 49.

(Location cited as NT 450 278). Philiphaugh Sawmill, late 19th century. A group of single-storey wood and brick buildings, with an older two-storey rubble block. The most interesting features are the operating low-breast, all-iron wheel, 12ft (3.7m) wide by 15ft (4.6m) diameter, which drives, through a gear ring, a sawbench by DM Wallace and Sons, engineers and millwrights, Kelso.

J R Hume 1976.
