Tower, Greenhead (Site). In 1948 the Selkirkshire Antiquarian Society unearthed in the farmyard at Greenhead the last vestiges of a square rubble-built tower, estimated to measure about 27 ft. either way over walls about 3 ft. thick. As no features of any interest were seen, the remains were covered up again.
Greenhead was a place of some importance in the Middle Ages. "Cristiane del Grenehevede del counte de Selkirke" figures in Ragman Roll of 1296, and again in the time of David II (1329-71) William Brown had a charter to the lands of "Greinerwde" or "Greinhead".
But the tower located by the Society is not likely to have been built before the 16th century.
RCAHMS 1957
NT 4904 2938. No surface signs of this tower exist at the spot excavated in 1948, which was pointed out by Mr. Wilson, farmer at Greenhead. It is at the NW angle of the farm outbuildings. The buildings here are said to contain the remains of the tower - but no evidence of antiquity was noted.
