OS 25" map (1967)

Fort (NR)

OS 6" map (1923)

The 'fort' marked on OS 6" 1923, 250 yds SE of NT41SW 6, has been almost completely destroyed by cultivation; neither the character nor the extent of the work can now be determined.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1949

As stated by the RCAHMS, no intelligible remains of this feature exist.

Revised at 25".

Visited by OS (WDJ) 26 February 1965

The earthwork situated at 270 m O D on a small ridge which slopes gently to the NE is the fragmentary remains of a settlement. It is bounded around the SW and SE sides by a scarp 1.2 m in average height. The NW side is partly delimited by a spread bank 1.1 m high externally and 0.3 m high internally; elsewhere only slight scarping is visible. The NE end is marked by the traces of a ditch which now only survives clearly on the S side. The internal dimensions of the settlement are 47.0 m NW-SE by a probable 86.5 m. The gently undulating interior is marked by several low scarps and banks which are from 0.2 m to 0.8 m high; these seem to define roughly irregular courts.

Towards the SW end, on the highest point in the settlement, there are three oval hollows which may indicate hut stances. No obvious entrance is apparent.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (JB) 18 December 1979.
