At Priesthaugh a great number of gold coins were found, supposed to have been deposited by some of the attendants of Queen Mary when she visited Bothwell at Hermitage Castle in Liddisdale (in 1566).
OSA 1796 (T Elliot)
The coins were found towards the close of the 18th century, and were afterwards in the possession of Mr Elliot, of Redhaugh, about the year 1795.

Near the close of the 18th century, during digging operations, a number of gold coins were found, six of which have the profile of Mary, Queen of Scots.
