The 18th c dovecot in the grounds of Inveresk Gate (NT 346 720) is generally decayed, its roof and walls covered with heavy creepers. It is a rectangular, two chambered structure with crowstepped gables. Each chamber has an entrance in the front (S) wall, with an oval window above each. A string course runs round all four walls. There are seven pigeon entrances in each chamber, two-thirds down the slate roof. The dovecot, which contains 1163 stone nests, measures 28'3" x 17'9 1/2" over 35" thick walls.
