Archaeology Notes

NT37SE 66 392 728.

By the end of the 13th century coal was being worked (in Tranent parish) by the local lord as well as by the monks of Newbattle Abbey. Until the close of the 15th century the outcrops were worked by means of sloping shafts or mines, but subsequently vertical shafts with spiral stairs were developed and several of these dating from 1526 may be seen beside the main Edinburgh road near Dolphingston (NT 392 728).

TSA 1953.
