NT37SE 15 c. 38 74

'The monks of Newbattle, who obtained a grant of Preston, before 1189, established a salt-work here, which gave rise to the name of Preston Pans.'

The monks of Newbattle were, in 1198, making salt at Salt Preston or Althamer, the older names of the village of Prestonpans (NT 38 74).

C E Green 1907

Roland, son of Uctred gave the monks of Melrose Abbey a salt-work in Preston. In 1460, Robert de Hamylton of Fyngalton gave them similar grants in his teritory of Saltpreston.
