(NT 3321 6619) Archbishop Leighton's House (NR)

OS 6" map (1968)

17th century, said to have been Archbishop Leighton's house; altered; now two stories with 3-bay W front. Originally three stories, rectangular , with a polygonal stair-turret to E. Altered several times; original wall-head appears to have been raised, either in late 17th or early 18th century, the three stories being made into two by shifting floor levels and re-windowing W front wall. Additions to rear mainly 19th century. Original openings on gables now lie between floors and are blocked. Built of rubble and ashlar with deep raised skews and rebuilt end stacks.

The original house, a rectangular structure, 13.0m x 6.0m, is of ashlar-ended rubble masonry, two storeys high. It has been added to on the E. In use as a residence.

Name confirmed as 'Archbishop Leighton's House' (Mr Webster, caretaker, Newbattle Abbey).
