(NT 3617 5978 - NT 3664 5973) Ancient Way (R)

OS 6" map (1908)

This old road is supposed to be part of the Roman road, known to have passed near Currie, which is mentioned by Chalmers. A stretch c.300 yds long at the base of the hill shows some signs of a rude pavement, of which no trace is seen thereafter. Though many people presume this to be a Roman road, it is doubtful if this is actually the case (Rev W Leslie).

Name Book 1853; G Chalmers 1807

Perambulation from NT 3716 5977 to NT 3999 5893 failed to locate any characteristics of a Roman Road and this road is almost certainly of much later date.

Activities

Project (April 2009 - February 2015)

The Borders Railway Project proposals are to reinstate the Newcraighall to Tweedbank section of the former Waverley Line. The reinstated railway line will be approximately 48km long and the majority of the route will use the existing railway embankment.

Several field surveys, archaeological evaluations and standing building surveys were undertaken by CFA Archaeology from April 2009 until February 2015.
