Archaeology Notes

HU31NE 2 396 186.

HU 397 185. The remains of a Neolithic house lie on a grassy slope some 45 yards east of the main road from Lerwick to Sumburgh and about 500 yards south of the junction.

The remains, which measure 45' by 36' overall, consist of a low bank, about 1 1/2' high, containing many set stones, enclosing a hollow. A gap on the SSE and a rounded return of the stonework here suggest the position of the entrance.

C S T Calder 1958.

A Neolithic/Bronze Age house measuring c.11.0m by c.8.5m as described by Calder at HU 3960 1867 with an assoiciated field system. A second smaller house at HU 3965 1862 survives as a turf-covered bank, with two stones set on edge defining the inner wall face, and measures 6.0m N-S by 5.0m E-W. There is no apparent entrance. The field system comprises field walls of large upright stones and lynchets, mostly obscured by peat growth.
