Archaeology Notes

NT33NW 23 c. 332 379

About 1/4 mile north of the site of the former parish church (NT 3343 3751) stood an even earlier one. 'This church of oldest date' said to be dedicated to St. Calixtus is mentioned for the first time in authentic record in the reign of Malcolm the Maiden, about the year 1159. The King granted the church of Innerleithen to the monks of Kelso, and bestowed on it the rights and privileges of sanctuary.

J Hardy 1882

The church stood in the Kirklands field, not far from and a little to the north of St. Ronan's Mill, - (NT 3355 3793).

J Wilson 1889-94

The earliest ecclesiastical building connected with the parish, stood in the field on the hillside, a few hundred yards to the NW of the manse. Until a few years ago, vestiges of the building and the cemetery that surrounded it were still to be seen.

R Renwick 1897

No trace of the church has been found, and no further information was obtained.

Visited by OS (EGC) 20 June 1961.
