Archaeology Notes

NT31SW 2 3415 1437.

NT 342144 171. Standing Stone. Black Rig. This stone stands about 700 yds. SE. of Clearburn Cottage, near the summit of Black Rig and on a slope facing NE. It is a pillar 3 ft. high and of rhomboidal section, its other dimensions being 2 ft and 11 in. and its major axis being aligned from NNW. to SSE. It is set with packing stones on top of a slight mound 21 ft. in diameter and rising about 3 ft. on its downhill side; on its uphill side the nearly flat top of the mound is flush with the adjoining surface. It may possibly have served as a landmark on the drove-road described under RCAHMS 1957 No. 92. (cf also No. 98.)

RCAHMS 1957, visited 1948

This stone was located at NT 3415 1437 and is as described by RCAHMS except that it is now lying on its side and there are no signs of the packing stones previously recorded.
