(NT 2325 8582) Burntisland Town Hall is in the High Street at the corner of Kirkgate. It contains the prison and was erected in 1598, but the old building has been repaired several times and only a very small portion of it remains. The building as it now stands looks modern.

Name Book 1854.

The present Town Hall was built in 1843. There is nothing earlier visible from the outside.

Visited by OS (J P) 24 June 1974

Architecture Notes

The High Street was re-numbered prior to 1975

Site Management (23 July 2024)

Long two storey stone-built range abutting rear elevation of Burgh Chambers. Slated roof, stone-built chimneys (one rebuilt in brick) with cans. Cast iron rainwater goods, timber multi-pane over split pane windows to upper floor. Altered openings to ground floor. Boundary iron railings intact to east. External stair and porch entrance to upper floor, to West elevation.

Part of Burntisland Burgh Chambers, potentially predating current building as a long rectangular range appears on earlier mapping. Possible later addition of upper floor. Ground floor reported to have been former jail block with the upper floor housing the Burgh Officer (Burntisland Heritage Trust).
