(NT 2346 8590) East Port (NR)

OS 6" map, Fifeshire, 1st ed., (1854)

East Port, Burntisland. The entrance into the High Street at the E end. The former chief magistrate, and the present town clerk, believe that the town was at one time fortified and that this was the East Gate or Port.

Both recall that there was a stone arch over the street here, and

that it was taken down because of its obstruction to traffic. There are now no remains.

No other entrance to the town has the name of Port.

Name Book 1854.

A barrier across the High Street is shown on Elphinstone's plan of Bunrtisland c. 1745 (Roy Scot Geogr Soc 1936) It is not named.

Roy Scot Geogr Soc 1936.

East Port: erected AD 1635, demolished AD 1843.

A Young 1924.

There are no structural remains of this gate.
