Archaeology Notes

NT28NW 15 centred 204 861.

Near the village of Aberdour, there is a cairn on top of a hill. Some years ago, when carrying stones away from it, the farmer found a stone coffin containing the skeleton of a man, a copper spearhead with coppernails and a piece of clear substance like amber, supposed to have been an amulet. Several earthen vessels, containing human bones, were also found in the cairn. The cairn was conical and the coffin was in the centre at the base. The radius of the cairn was 20 paces. In the same field, the farmer found great quantities of human bones."

Statistical Account (OSA, written by Rev R Liston) 1792.

The cairn was on the farm of Dalachy (NT 204 861)

W Ross 1885.

No trace of this cairn was found during fieldwork.

Visited by OS (W D J) 11 March 1959.
