(NT 2278 8847) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, (1967)

In 1948 a ploughman on Balbie Farm found a short cist on the E side of an artificial-looking knoll some 90' across, at about 30' from the centre. The cist contained two skeletons, one piled in a corner of the cist with a food vessel on top, the other articulated and in a crouched position. The food vessel is in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS].

S Piggott 1950.

At the site of this short cist, pointed out by the farmer, there is a large ploughed mound, almost certainly a tumulus or cairn. It is circular on plan, measuring 32.0m in diameter and 1.2m in height; there is no ditch.

Visited by OS (W D J) 11 March 1959.

Situated in a ploughed field, this tumulus is as described in the previous field report. A further cist was found about 1968; finds from it are in the NMAS.

Visited by OS (S F S) 17 December 1975.
