Archaeology Notes

NT27SW 21 246 748.

(NT 246 748) In 1823, several cists were found when digging the foundation of a house on the N side of Saxe-Coburg Place, near St Bernard's Chapel. One contained unburnt human bones accompanied by two cinerary urns, which were donated to the NMAS (Wilson 1891). Some urns (of unspecified type) were also obtained from the other cists (Archaeol Scot 1831).

Only one cinerary urn from this site is noted in the NMAS catalogue (Acc No: EA 3). It is described as 12" x 11", containing burnt bones, found with unburnt bones.

D Wilson 1891; Archaeol Scot 1831; NMAS 1892.

The precise find spot of these cists was not located.
