The remains of seven human bodies were found 'recently' between the spot where the cinerary urn noted on NT27SE 84 was found and the top of the glen called Windy Gowl (name: NT 279 725) when cutting a new road.
They were deposited in cavities at short, irregular distances from each other and at depths between 2' and 5' (0.6 and 1.5m) from the surface. The bodies must have been crushed into the excavations. Also found nearby was an iron axe-head, 7" x 2 1/2" (178 by 64mm), which was donated to the NMAS in 1856 by H M Board of Works (Acc No: MP 18). A few corroded copper coins were also found.
It is suggested that as the adjoining crag is known as 'Hangman's Knowe', the bodies may be those of executed criminals.
