This stone, which formerly stood at an unspecified spot E of Craigmillar (NT 28 71) was, in 1921, used as a gatepost at the entrance to a private churchyard c. 300m WNW of Niddrie House (NT37SW 28). A block of conglomerate, it measures 1.0m by 0.5m at base and stood 1.5m high, with numerous, apparently natural, cup-marks scattered over its surface.
G Good 1893; RCAHMS 1929.
No trace in an area of modern housing development.
Visited by OS 20 August 1975.
This cup-marked stone has been re-discovered by Mr Wilson at the corner of Greendykes Road and Niddrie House Avenue, a few metres behind a utility building (electricity) and just outside a small burial ground. The location was mapped using an OS 1:25,000 scale map. The stone was noted as having cup-markings near the base, one of which had the appearance of being natural and five others looked 'classically megalithic'. Mr Wilson stated that the dimensions given by the Ordnance Survey were approximately correct.
