Archaeology Notes

NT26NE 28 2210 6215.

(NT 2210 6215) House of Muir Sheep Market: At this place is held a sheep market once a year on the second Monday of April. In 1612, the magistrates of Edinburgh gave Lord Abernethy of Salton the right to hold fairs at House of Muir. It was formerly held once a week and was the sheep market for the city. Grant notes that in 1661 Charles II confirmed to Edinburgh the right to have a market at House of Muir, and the last was held about 1871. (The name appears on OS 6" 1852 just S of the "enclosures" noted on NT26SW 8, so possibly some, or all, of them are associated with this market).

Name Book 1852; W Grant 1927
