NT26SE 52 2848 6423 to 2851 6381.
A cutting at the Hewan Bog close by the River Esk is of uncertain purpose, but may be associated with the Battle of Roslin (NT26SE 1).
Information from J Taylor, curator, Roslin Chapel to OS, 1954.
A short hollow-way, which would appear to be the original road or path along the W bank of the River Esk:
NT 2848 6423 to NT 2849 6400 - A strong bank 1.75m high and 4 to 5m broad, with a slight ditch or hollow on W. This bank is quite firm and not flattened or spread.
NT 2849 6400 to NT 2849 6394 - The earthwork merges into a decided hollow-way with the artificial bank still on the E side. Width of hollow way, 3m, depth below bank, 1.5m.
NT 2849 6394 to NT 2851 6381 - Beyond the modern footpath which breaks the earthwork, it continues as a hollow-way for some distance, merging gradually into a terrace-way until it meets the path again at NT 2851 6381. Along this latter part of the course, the roadway is rising gradually high above the river.
No dating evidence could be found for this probable old road; there is no evidence for stonework or metalling.
Visited by OS 3 September 1954 and 30 October 1975.
