Archaeology Notes

NT26NW 25 2488 6893 to 2486 6894.

A: NT 2488 6893 - A short cist was found on 3rd June 1972 during building operations on Buckstone housing estate. It was damaged before examination, and measured 1.45m x 0.48m x 0.45m deep, aligned approximately E-W. It was built with four side slabs, and had two small cap-stones, but on the N side thin slabs overlay the side slab to raise the wall to the correct level for the capstone.

B: NT 2486 6894 - A second cist, said to have been slightly larger, was destroyed before it could be examined, but photographs taken at the time of discovery show that it was of similar construction, with at least two courses of thin stones above one side slab.

Each cist contained a single skeleton found in disorder at the W end of the grave. Probably the vibration of heavy earth-moving machinery had displaced the bones. No artifacts were recorded. These cists were close to, but apparently never inserted into, a large rocky knoll - one of two lying close together (J Close-Brooks and D V Clarke 1972).

Site surveyed at 1:1250.
