Archaeology Notes

NT25SW 10.05 21513 53447

The stump of a dovecot stands about 200 yds SE of the stables. It is circular on plan, measures 21ft 6in in diameter over walls 2ft 6in in thickness, and now rises to a height of 13ft 8in. As well as being curtailed in height, the structure has been partially rebuilt, and some of the stone nesting-boxes have disappeared from the interior; the moulding now seen at the truncated wall-head may represent an original string-course. This is probably the dovecot for which designs were

being prepared by Lord Milton in 1738-40.

RCAHMS 1967, visited June 1963

This dovecot, is generally as decribed, is roofed with an entrance on its N side and stone nest boxes intact.

Visited by OS (RD), 6 February 1970
