Archaeology Notes

NT25SW 4 c. 200 522.

An LBA socketed axe from Lamancha is in National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no. DE 67), and three Breton-type Late Bronze Age socketed axes also from Lamancha are in Hull Museum.

J M Coles 1962

No further information.

Visited by OS (RD) 6 February 1970.

986. (Socketed axe of Taunton type). Single find, partly smooth, upper part pitted, green black, the axe is broken in the middle and inefficiently repaired with (modern ?) solder of dark grey colour, mouth damaged; haft ribs on either side of the socket rather unusual consisting of a vertical line with three others impinging upon it obliquely (an inverted herring-bone pattern). Length 105mm, mouth 25 x 25mm, cutting edge 40mm, weight 140 gms. NMAS DE 67.

1648. (Socketed axe of Armorican type). Smooth, green patina, brittle, mouth and casting seam untrimmed. Length 127mm, mouth 22 x 25mm, cutting edge 35mm, weight 300 gms. Hull Museum (no reg.).

1649. (Socketed axe of Armorican type). Dark green patina, untrimmed. Length 123mm, mouth 25 x 29mm, cutting edge 35mm, weight 270 gms. Hull Museum (no reg.).

1650. (Socketed axe of Armorican type). Smooth, green, brittle, mouth corroded. Length 130mm, mouth 22 x 26mm, cutting edge 35mm, weight 260 gms. Hull Museum (no reg.).

(Nos. 1648-50 are listed as 'Hoard, nothing further known').

P K Schmidt and C B Burgess 1981.

There is no evidence that the recorded single find (Schmidt and Burgess no. 986) was discovered or associated with the three axes of Breton type (nos. 1648-50); the discrepancy between their types makes this unlikely.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 12 April 1990.
