(Area: NT 2479 5564) Ancient Gold and Silver Coins found here (NAT)
OS 25" map (1893)
These were found in 1794 in the courtyard of Kingside farm when a horse disturbed a flat stone, revealing a pot or urn containing a great quantity of gold and silver coins. Their exact number was never known; the silver coins crumbled away on removal, and the gold coins were tiven away to various people. The tenant of Kingside had two of them, with the inscription 'Jacobus S. Scotorum Rex', but the date is effaced.
Name Book 1856; NSA 1845
According to the farmer (H Turnbull, Kingside Farm, Leadburn), the coins were found at the above spot in the courtyard of the original farmhouse. The adjoining quarry is still known as the Gold and Silver Quarry
