(NT 2153 4247) Homestead (NR)

OS 6" map (1965)

This settlement is situated on the SW slopes of White Meldon, 200ft above the Meldon Burn. It measures 140ft by 110ft within a wall which has been extensively robbed to build a sheepfold which overlies it. Originally the wall was probably about 8ft in thickness, but, although, several outer facing stones are visible, no stones belonging to the inner face can now be distinguished. The entrance, on the SW, opens into a court which occupies about one-third of the available living area, while the remaining two-thirds consists of two terraces upon which timber houses presumably stood.

(Information from R W Feachem notebook 1961, 19)

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1961

Revised at 1/2500.

Photographed by the RCAHMS in 1980.
