(NT 2523 4045) Site of (NAT) St Mungo's Well (NR)

OS 25" map (1856)

St Mungo's Well was situated about 10 chains NE of the church. It was an excellent spring well, but it became drained when improvements were made in the town (Name Book 1856). Some supposed remains of it were found in 1845 when lowering the street.

W Chambers 1856

St Mungo's Well is a spring on Venlaw near the Hydropathic. There is no doubt that the well is very old, reminiscent of when St Mungo evangelised Peeblesshire. In 1728, a water supply was led from the well into the burgh, the water being piped into a well constructed at or upon the Dean's gutter opposite the Dean's Wynd on the N side of the High Street.

J W Buchan and H Paton 1925; Peebles Official Guide 1955

Sited to NT 2525 4046. The well in the High Street was not the original well. No trace of St Mungo's Well was found on Venlaw. Inquiries at the Peebles Water Board offices and at the Hydorpathic Hotel revealed no further information. Local inhabitants have no knowledge of the well's location.
