(NT 2460 4647) Earthwork (NR)
OS 6" map (1966)
Stretches of two earthworks following contours (Y and Z) occur on the N slopes of Milkieston Hill, the ends of which have been destroyed by cultivation. Each consists of a line of contiguous pits, the spoil from which has been dumped on the downhill side to form a low irreg- ular bank some 20' thick. The pits measure about 8' long, 6' wide and 2' broad. Y has a single entrance 7 yds wide while Z has an entrance 13 yds wide which is set at right angles to the contours, the ends of the bank and ditch being staggered on either side of the gap.
The date and purpose of these earthworks is uncertain.
(Information from R W Feachem notebook 1959, 6)
RCAHMS 1967
The earthworks are generally as described. Both now terminate on the stone dyke surrounding the former woodland in which they are situated. Although RCAHMS show an eastwards extension of 'Y' there is no trace of this on the ground and the feature visible on APs seems to be a continuation of the track which runs alongside the earthwork.
On the OS 6" 'Y' is shown as having joined with the linear earthwork to the S (see NT24NW 35). There is no surface indication of this and the evidence on APs appears to be entirely circumstantial. furthermore, from their different methods of construction they are incompatible.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
