Black Dwarf's Cottage stands on Woodhouse Farm, c. 1 mile SW of Kirkton of Manor, and is oblong in plan, measuring 23'8" overall N-S by 18'1". The building is single-storeyed and the masonry is whinstone rubble incorporating dressings of red sandstone; the roof was originally thatched. A later cottage extends southwards beyond the south gable wall of the original building. A small doorway on the E side has a stone inscribed DR 1802 above it.

The cottage was built by Sir James Naesmyth of Posso for David Ritchie, the cripple portrayed in Sir Walter Scott's novel 'The Black Dwarf'. Ritchie lived at Woodhouse from about 1762 until his death in 1811. RCAHMS 1967, visited 1962
