Upwards of 600 Roman denarii were found in October 1851 in the parish of Portmoak.
The field where they were found was formerly a deep bog. The coins were all lying close together as if they had been enclosd in a bag. Also found at the same spot were an iron sword and an imperfect silver ornament thought to have been the crest of a helmet.
The hoard included coins of all the emperors from Nero to Severus (54 - 211 AD) and may have belonged to the latter emperor's expedition c AD 208. A detailed account of 103 coins is given.

The 103 coins described in Wilson (D Wilson 1855) are in the National Museum of Antiquities.
G MacDonald 1918.
About 1933 or 34, 26 denarii belonging to a trust estate were sent to the National Museum of Antiquities for identification. A note preserved with them said that they had been found at Kirkness in 1851, in a moss. As Kirkness is in the parish of Portmoak there can be no doubt that they formed part of the hoard described in Wilson (D WIlson 1855).
