The high part of the road about 1/4 mile S (of St Leonard's Hospital - NT08NE 28) was named "Spital Crosshead", from a pillar which, according to tradition, was erected there, decorated on top with a St Andrew's cross, and removed probably towards the end of the 16th or 17th century.
