Archaeology Notes

NT17SE 50.00 NT 18159 70535

NT17SE 50.01 NT 1787 7044 Road Bridge (No.10A)

This bridge carries an unclassified road over the Union Canal (built 1818-22, designer Hugh Baird) immediately NW of East Hermiston farm. It measures 17.7m in length, 5.6m in width and 5.2m in height; to its W is a basin, adjoining the S side of the canal, and bounded by rounded horizontal-drover kerbstones. Winding apparatus for gates survive on the S bank beneath the bridge arch.

Visited by RCAHMS (MH) December 1978.

The road which traverses the canal at this point now leads nowhere, as the opening in December 1995 of the M8 western approach motorway effectively cut it off to the N.

H Brown 1997.

This bridge and the road it carries are both clearly shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Edinburghshire 1853, sheet 5) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1989), but the road is seen to be cut off, although labelled Gogar Station Raod, on the OS 1:10000 raster map (ND).

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 8 February 2001.
