Archaeology Notes

NT17NW 4 1155 7856

(NT 1155 7856) Trenches containing Human Bones Graves Medals &c found here (NAT)

OS 6" map (1856).

See also NT17NW 2.

When improving and levelling the grounds surrounding Springfield (information from Mr King) (now Inchgarvie House: NT 1143 7860) some years ago, a great quantity of human remains were discovered. They were contained in deep trenches, the sides of which were edged with stone flags. These trenches were about 7' deep and 3' wide; in the spaces between them were discovered a number of detached graves, containing human bones, etc. At the bottom of each grave was a layer of sand and sea shells, and above the bones was a quantity of charcoal. (See also NT17NW 2).

NSA 1845 (J Scott); Name Book 1855.

The present owner of Inchgarvie House knows nothing of these finds. Current development on land that was once attached to Inchgarvie House has not unearthed any human remains.

Visited by OS (BS), 15 August 1974.
