Old Sheepfolds (NAT)

OS 6" map (1912)

A pair of ring enclosures, close to the W bank of the Back Burn. The larger, 'A', is 45' in internal diameter and has a slight gap in the bank on the SW. The smaller, 'B', 15 yds S, is 35' in diameter and has a well-marked gap in the bank, 4' wide, on the SW.

(Information from A McLaren notebook 2, 11)

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1962

These enclosures, situated on level ground, are generally as described. Both measure 16.0m in diameter from the centres of the turf banks. 'A' is less well defined than 'B', and is probably of an earlier date. The interiors are featureless but around the outside of each bank is an irregular area where the turf has been stripped. Near the enclosures are the apparent turf-covered footings of two rectangular buildings.

These enclosures differ slightly from other circular structures in the area and are probably sheepfolds.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (JTT) 31 August 1964 and (SFS) 28 October 1974
