Archaeology Notes

NC50NE 30 5978 0697

(NC 5978 0697) Tumuli (NR).

OS 6" map, Sutherlandshire, 2nd ed., (1908)

These mounds have virtually disappeared due to cultivation and construction of a new road, but it would appear that they were the usual field clearance heaps. RCAHMS note a hut circle lying 100 yards to the south, but this could not be located.

Visited by OS (W D J) 28 June 1963.

RCAHMS 1911.

The area containing the 'tumuli' shown on OS 6" map, 2nd ed., (1908) is now under crop, and there is no trace of mounds or a hut circle. On the E side of the public road in pasture at NC 599 069 are several stone clearance heaps of a minor field system. These show no pattern of cultivation plots. Presumably the 'tumuli' were also a result of field clearance.

Visited by OS (N K B), 26 July 1976.
