(NT 1732 4570 and NT 1734 4572) Enclosures (NR)

OS 6" map (1964)

These two ring enclosures lie on low ground immediately W of the Flemington Burn, each is 30' in internal diameter.

(Information from A McLaren notebook 2, 72)

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1963; D Christison 1888

Situated on level ground these circular turf-banked enclosures measure 10.0m diameter within a bank 2.5m wide. There is no trace of an entrance to either.

The enclosures appear to be recent and are probably sheep folds (Christison described 4 enclosures - the other two undoubtedly being sheep folds).

Visited by OS (WDJ) 26 August 1964 and (SFS) 14 October 1974

Activities

Field Visit (5 March 2024)

Two circular ring-banks are situated about 8m apart to either side of the modern track on the flood plain to the W of the Flemington Burn. Both measure about 9m in diameter within a grass-grown soil bank up to 3m across and 0.6m in height. They both overlie rig, and both have a subtle external turf-stripping scar about 2m across. There is a very slight dip in the line of the banks on the W, which may have been an entrance. Their form and location are consistent with turf-walled sheepfolds, while the relationship with the rig indicates that they are post-medieval in date.

Visited by HES Archaeological Survey (D. Cowley) and Designations (A. Fulton, A. Rutherford), 5 March 2024
