(NT 0140 8129) Dovecot (NAT)

OS 25" map, (1972)

Dovecot: 17th(?) century. Oblong. 2 storeys, Rubble-walled, E end patched in brick. Roofless (formerly had lean-to roof and crow-steps). Round-headed doorway in W end. Upper storey has 415 brick nest-holes. Lower storey altered to house winding-engine (now gone) for nearby side-shaft, both side-walls pierced by large round arch.

SDD 1960-.

This dovecot is generally as described. The building sequence here is difficult to establish but it seems unlikely that a winding-house would be constructed from a dovecot. The patched E end and the solid stone construction of the ground floor, together with the absence of nest-boxes on the ground floor, suggest that the building was originally a winding-house. The brick infilling on the E end and the nest-boxes on the first floor are the same construction and appear to be secondary.

Visited by OS (B S) 7 March 1974.

NT 0140 8128 Magnetic survey was carried out across the Park (as a 200m transect) in October 2006 to try and detect a possible continuation of the Antonine Wall and Ditch from Bridgeness to Carriden. The results were negative.
