Carneil Hill is supposed to be the site of a battle either of the Romans or Danes. 'Upon opening a cairn upon Carneil Hill about 20 years ago there was found an urn of earthenware containing some small copper coins but they had no inscription which could be read.' (OSA 1791-9) 'Upon Carneil Hill near CARNOCK the HORESTII appear to have had a strength...in 1774 upon opening some tumulii upon Carneil Hill, several urns were found containing many Roman coins (Chalmers 1887-94) At the east end of a small ridge about 40 yards North of Carneil Cottage it is said a Mr Davidson, a labourer 50 years ago (c. 1803) found a Roman can or urn containing charred bones of two children.

No trace of cairn, mounds, or earthworks, were encountered on this hill. No additional information was encountered during investigation.
