(NT 0877 8727) Spa Well (NAT)

OS 6"map, (1938)

Wallace, Spa Well: A long disused well situated a little below the Tower Bridge (NT08NE 4) at the foot of Tower Hill. It is said to have received its name from Sir William Wallace who is alleged to have drunk from it. (P Chalmers 1844-59)

Henderson (1879) states that this well was known as Spaw Well, or Well of Spaw, and suggests that this was easily corrupted into the name "Wallace Spa".

P Chalmers 1844-59; E Henderson 1879.

A stone-lined, disused well.

Visited by OS (D W R) 18 February 1974.
