(NT 0926 8747) Site of East Port (NR)

OS 1:1056 map, Fifeshire, Dunfermline, (1854)

The East Port, which was situated near the E of High Street, was one of the six ports of the town of Dunfermline. These were probably built immediately after the burgh had received its charter from the abbot in 1395. The first actual mention of the port, however, occurs in 1488, and a stone bearing a rose, the initials W G, and the date 1609, which was inserted near the top of the E gable probably indicated repairs to the East Port and East Port House. The port was ordered to be demolished at a Town Council meeting on 8th October 1752.
