(NT 0287 7104) Bangour House (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1970)

Bangour House was for many centuries the residence of the Hamiltons of Bangour, and is said to be the birthplace of the celebrated poet, William Hamilton (1704-54). The site can only be traced by some slight elevations in the surface, as of wall foundations. It is surrounded by large trees, marking the extent of the garden attached to the mansion.

Name Book 1856; F H Groome 1901

The site is now occupied by ornamental gardens, and there are no traces of buildings.

Visited by OS (DWR) 28 March 1974
