(NT 0308 7268) Binny Church (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1970)

Binny or Binning Church, which was dedicated to St Giles, in origin was a chapel of Linlithgow and as such belonged by the gift of David I (1124-53) to St Andrews Priory. The church had become parochial before 1548, and the parishes of Binny and Linlithgow were united about 1564. The spot pointed out in 1856 was traditionally the site of the church, no traces of it remaining, though a local informant stated that old people, living at the end of the 18th century, could recollect when portions of it were to be seen. Many human bones have been found on a slightly raised eminence in the field called Chapel Hil, indicative of a graveyard surrounding the church.

Name Book 1856; H Scott 1915; H Scott 1950; I B Cowan 1967.

The site of this church and graveyard is located on the hill-top and is now covered with rough pasture. A few stones lie around, but no trace of the church is visible.

Visited by OS (JLD), 1 December 1952.

Nothing has been found during ploughing at the site. No further information.

Visited by OS (DWR), 28 March 1974.
