(NT 0045 7264) Tartraven Castle (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map (1970)

Tartraven Castle formerly stood on the spot. Although nothing of it now remains, the foundations and part of the gateway were still visible at the beginning of the 19th century. It is locally said to have been a small castle or mansion belonging to a family named Ross, who were staunch Royalists in Cromwell's time. (It should be noted that a Sir Richard de Melville, who lived c.1180-1215, gave land to Tartraven Chapel - NT07SW 5 - so possibly there was an earlier structure on the site.)

Name Book 1856

There is no trace of the castle at the published site, but local informants state that the farm steading contains stones from the castle, several of which are dressed. (But see NT07SW 14)
